Liposuction (also known as lipoplasty or liposculpture) is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of fat deposits from different parts of the body improving your body contours and proportion. The excess fat is removed through small incisions using a suction pump or a large syringe.

Liposuction can be carried out to most areas of the body. It may be used to reduce localized fat deposits of the: hips, thighs buttocks, abdomen, waist, back, chest, knees, calves, ankles, arms, neck, chin or even cheeks. Often liposuction is combined with other plastic surgeries such as a facelift, breast augmentation or reduction, buttock augmentation (with fat injection) or tummy tuck.

The best candidates for liposuction are people who are of normal weight or who are close to their ideal weight with firm, elastic skin but who have pockets of excess fat in certain areas. But the treatment also brings beneficial results in obese patients because it reduces the total fat mass which can facilitate further weight loss. Although the patient should not expect to lose a huge amount of body weight.

Liposuction not only can shape the body but also using the appropriate method of operation can leave smoother skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite.

The effects of liposuction can be long lasting provided the patient does not gain a significant amount of weight. They depend on the patient’s life style, diet and exercise routine.
